Frequently asked questions
How Learn Beatboxing listens, scores and keeps your progress.
Is it free?
Yes. Every level, the guides and the practice are free. There is nothing to buy and nothing to download.
Do I need an account?
No. Your streak and levels are kept in your browser under a random ID. Signing in with Google is optional; it keeps your progress when you switch phones or browsers.
Is my beatboxing recorded or uploaded?
No. The microphone is analysed on your own device while you practise, and the sound is never uploaded. Only the scores are saved: the level, how many sounds were right, missed or extra, and how steady the timing was.
Which phones and browsers work?
Chrome on Android, Safari on iPhone and iPad, and Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer. Allow the microphone when the browser asks. A quiet room helps more than an expensive phone.
Why do I teach the phone my sounds every time?
Everyone's B, T and K sound different, and a beginner's sounds change from day to day. A 30-second warm-up of B T K T lets the phone learn how yours sound today, which is far more accurate than one model for everyone. You only teach it once per visit.
Why did it hear the wrong sound?
Usually because two of your sounds are too alike, most often T and K. The result shows which two got mixed up and how to make them more different. Then press "Teach it again". If you rushed or went quiet, sounds can also be missed.
What does "tuh" and "kuh" mean in my result?
It means your voice came in after the sound. Beatbox drums are air only: whisper the T and the K. Put your fingers on your throat; you shouldn't feel a buzz.
How do levels unlock?
Score 90% or more and the next level unlocks. The score is the average of your three sounds, so getting every hi-hat right can't hide a missing kick. There are 20 levels, each a little faster or a new pattern.
It hears lots of extra sounds. What can I do?
The click from the speaker may be getting into the microphone. Use headphones, or turn off "Keep the click playing while recording" and follow the flashing box instead. Breathing loudly into the phone can also count as a sound; hold it a little further away.
How long should I practise each day?
Five to ten minutes is enough: the warm-up, a practice run and a couple of scored takes. Short daily practice builds the habit and the mouth movements faster than one long session a week.
Can kids use it?
Yes. There is no account to make, the sound stays on the device, and the basic sounds are whispered. Children under 13 should use it without signing in. There is a guide for kids.
How do I delete my data?
Clearing this site's data in your browser starts you over with a new ID. To delete a signed-in account and its progress, email [email protected] from the address you signed in with.
